Security employment is offered by the millions. In fact, in 2004, there were over 1 million security jobs in all industries combined in the United States alone. Security jobs may include working for banks, VIP security, independent contractors, investigations, or private eyes, hotels, buildings, the government, casinos, restaurants, bars and department stores. As the responsibilities vary, so does the compensation. Some seek part time security employment and others a lifetime commitment. The security employment could be a security guard, officer, or security engineers.

Many police choose to work as a security officer after retirement or off duty. Military and other law enforcement officer’s second alternative is to seek security employment in often high profile industries. In some states, an ex military or ex police need no security training, they've had enough. All they need to do is to attach themselves to security agencies or work independently. Security officers have lots of things to do, but one aim is to protect against terrorists, vandals, thieves, stalkers, kidnappers, and even fire. The security officers protect their clients’ property and family. Communications is also important in security guard’s job. A radio, a telephone system is used to contact with the police and fire department in case of an emergency. They would also write detailed reports and may sometimes have to testify in court.



Security guards or officers may work in either mobile or a static position. Security officers assigned to static positions usually serve the customer in one place for a specified period of time. The guard must be familiar with the area and the individuals connected with it and must be vigilant at all times when monitoring CCTVs and alarm systems. On the other hand a mobile guard conducts ocular checks within the assigned area. In any case a guard may detain, question and deter violators and may respond to service calls.

Security employment varies in size of organization, client, and type. In the malls or department stores for instance, a security officer’s duty is to protect shoppers, goods, money, equipment, and jewelries. They may work incognito, arrest suspected shoplifters or law breakers, and assist the police. They may patrol parking lots to protect the cars and motorcycles from being catnapped. When working in hospitals, the guards must protect patients, staff and hospital properties and likewise the parking lot areas. Airport security checks luggage, patrol the area, air plane and other important equipment. They may also prevent drunken passengers to board the plane and arrest anyone who carries deadly weapons on the plane.

Guards may also work in buildings, resorts, hotels, art galleries. Some work in factories, manufacturing facilities or work as a cyber security officer to protect sensitive information, from hackers and fraud dealers. There are security employment in military bases, installations, and facilities. Guards work in crowded places such as a stadium, schools, and parks or recreation centers are well trained in crowd control. In bars, restaurants, and clubs, guards screen customers at the entrance, maintain order and protect the clients' property.

Guards working in banks and other financial institutions protect money and other valuables transfers and accompany armored cars. Guards with high profile jobs wear protective suits especially when handling money transfers from one place to another. They also protect bank clients and staff; prevent robberies and carries out orders to use drastic measures to stop the criminals even if it meant shooting them.

Security employment in the gaming industries also abound. They can work as a surveillance officers, floor and area guards and protect the patron and staff from cheaters, and robbers. Some guards may be in charge of money transport to the vault or vice versa. A surveillance team monitors CCTV, and determines wrong doing by either staff or patrons. They must be highly competent to do this because the casino could lose a lot of money if the guards are not doing their job. They would also review video recording or submit them to police and can be used in court as evidence.
